Towns and villages in Umbria

Civitella del Lago's history goes back to the Roman days. In the past it had several other names, one of which was not overly flattering: Civitella de' Pazzi, Small City of the Mad. The village hasn't changed much over the years, but the people nowadays are not only sensible, they're very kind. The view from the western side over the Tiber valley is gorgeous.

From Civitella we'll move to Orvieto and from there we'll show you some towns and villages with easy reach of Civitella. It includes Rome. It takes you between a bit more than an hour to one and a half hours to get there by car or by train.

• In summer you can attend a number of festas, concerts and exhibitions. Here in Civitella, 1,5 kilometres from the campsite, Vivaldi was played.
• The Ovo Pinto, Painted Egg, is widely recognised as outstanding art; these painted dishes are a treat and you can see them in the village.
• Civitella sits on a hill overlooking the Tiber Valley.
• You can't miss Orvieto. You can look at it from the campsite and when you get on the A1, it will be there.
• Pope Nicholas IV laid the cornerstone for the Duomo in Orvieto in 1290.
• Orvieto Pozzo, the waterkeep, can be visited.
• Acquasparta is home to a number of churches; the old part is quiet and beautiful.
• Medieval Amelia is just half an hour away.
• Assisi is not really very close, but a town (and churches) you must have seen.
• Baschi is just fifteen minutes by car.
• Bolsena is popular with the tourists because of Bolsena Lake, said to be one of the cleanest lakes in Italy.
• Isola Martana can only be reached by boat and lies in Lago di Bolsena.
• Fascinating sight: Civita de Bagnoregio. Also has an excellent restaurant (on your left when you have walked across the bridge).
• Taking the A1 northbound you can visit Cortona with its splendid square and numerous shops where you can buy ceramics.
• Cottanello Rieti in autumn.
• Umbrian landscape near Stroncone in spring.
• Lugnano di Teverina is also quite close.
• This is the Montefiascone Cupola, the church you can see from the campsite in the distance.
• As many Umbria towns Narni has a piazza where you can breathe Italian atmosphere.
• In one and a half hours travelling time you can walk around in Rome.
• Old part of Spello.
