Frequently asked questions
Higher pitches at camping

Frequently asked questions

Can we swim in Corbara Lake? Would our toddlers find enough kids to play with? We have a really big tent, how large are the pitches? Just three of the questions that are most often asked. We listed them for you.

≡

Road uphill and public transport

  • How steep is the last part of the route uphill?
We often get this question from people with big campers or old campervans. Of course, the last part is reasonably steep but the road is good enough and basically wide enough. When you come across the bus from Montecchio - once a day - could be your only unlucky moment. It's more that sometimes not really well-trained bikers finally get up here (7 kilometres uphill) exhausted and with sore legs. However, we offer cold beers and the wines are excellent ☺ ... and the view ☺ ...

  • Can I reach the campsite with public transport?
To be honest, that is not really easy. Every day there is a bus that leaves from Orvieto train station to Civitella del Lago at 14.00 hrs. From there it is a about a kilometre's walk on undulating (but certainly not steep) road. A good alternative could be the bus from Orvieto train station to Montecchio that goes more frequently. If you promise me you will stay for three nights or more I will gladly pick you up at Montecchio. Please do ring beforehand! And for some shopping or a restaurant, you really do not need a car.

Corbara Lake

  • Is swimming or boating allowed in Corbara Lake?
Officially it is prohibited, because the lake is a storage reservoir. You will also not be able to find an official mooringplace. More importantly, the water comes from the Tiber river (which is still also used as a sewer): for health reasons alone, we very much advise against swimming or boating on the lake.

  • A camping near a lake always attracts gnats and mosquitoes. What is the situation at Il Falcone?
We're in the middle of a wood, so we can't claim that we have no flying insects, but for gnats and mosquitoes we are far too high. The lake is 400 meters below us.

Children

  • We have two kids of 5 and 8. Are there enough other kids around to play with?
Just have a look at the photos in this site. They are having a great time. There is no playground however. We mostly have (older or younger) couples without kids or families the majority of which have younger kids, let's say up to fourteen years old.

  • Is there enough to do for small kids?
If they are happy to play in a quiet surroundings with whatever they find and if a game of tabletennis or going for a swim is enough for them, they will have a great time. If they (or the parents) expect animation programmes or dance parties or 'things to do', they will be severely disappointed.
On the other hand, 100 metres down the road there is a sports centre (entrance fee depends on activity) with a football-pitch and a large swimming-pool where they can do more sports.

  • Is there an animation-programme or disco at night?
No, afraid not. Our motto is peace and quiet. Moreover, our public doesn't appreciate that. The only sounds you will most of the time hear after 21.30 are the chirping of an occasional cricket and the ploink of a winebottle that is getting uncorked.

Pets

  • Can we take our dog?
No problem at all, as we don't think people will take their dog on a holiday if it is not well-trained. But you have to inform us first and you have to keep it on a leash at all times and remove everything your dog leaves behind. Dogs that easily start barking are not appreciated.

Swimming-pool

  • We don't like to get a pitch near the swimming-pool because of the noise. Is that possible?
That is possible, we like to listen to our guests. However, the swimming-pool is on the highest part of the campsite, so you will hardly notice it. We close the swimming-pool at 19.00 hrs every day.

  • How frequently do you check the quality of the swimming-water?
We do that every night after 19.00 hrs after the swimming-pool is closed. Incidentally, we do not use chlorine, but a solvent on the basis of salt that is better for our guests and the environment.

  • Is wearing a bathing-cap obligatory?
Yes, in Italy it is the law, so you cannot do without. You can buy them at our mini-market.

Size of pitches and climate

  • Have you got a large pitch of at least 100 m2?
At the bottom of the site, in the lowest part, there are certainly a few pitches that have this size or even a bit larger. There are also slightly smaller ones. We have some new reasonably big tent-only places of around 70/80 m2 with a stunning view, and some of the smaller places are joined together to offer more space to you.
The larger pitches are reserved on the basis of their booking-dates. We only have about ten of them, so you will have to be quick about booking these pitches.

  • Have you got shaded pitches?
We only have one pitch that is 80 per cent in the shade. The rest of the pitches are shaded either in the morning or in the late afternoon. Do not forget the campsite is in an olive-tree orchard. Olive-trees are not really big trees with dense foliage. But they do filter the sunlight, so there is always a place in your pitch with some shade. At the bottom of the campsite there are also some stone oaks. They gave more shade. For small kids who need their afternoon nap, just put the sleeping quarter of the tent in such a way that it is in the shade at 14.30. Plus: the terrace near the reception is covered, so you will always find shade (and a cool drink) there. Also the terrace next to the swimming-pool can be covered if the sun is strong, so that you can keep an eye on your kids from the shade.

  • How hot is it in the campsite in summer?
The site has an altitude of 520 meters, so it is always cooler than lower in the plains, especially at night. When there is no wind at all it can be hot at times, but mostly there is a cool breeze coming up the hill from the lake. Our clients find the climate very pleasant.

  • We would like to have one of the pitches with the gorgeous view. Where are they in the plan?
In the eastern part (righthand side) we created some big places with a splendid view. They all have electricity (6 amps) and water. However, they are only suitable for tents, the car has to stay in the parking places and there is a steep climb of 10 metres to be conquered to reach your pitch.

  • Is the campsite suitable for the disabled?
The terrain is unsuitable for wheelchairs. Only the path around the site is more or less paved. But for people who can walk and just have difficulty climbing, the lower part (in the south) is suitable because it is nearly flat grassland. The walk to the sanitary building does offer a two meter elevation.

Electricity, water and wifi

  • Does every pitch have electricity?
Yes, every pitch has electricity (3 or 6 Amps, dependent on the pitch) and drinking-water. Both are included in the price.
Please consult Amenities for a full description of the campsite.

  • Why isn't the wifi free?
This is all a matter of size. Firstly our wifi doesn't cover the full campsite. So we can't promise you have coverage. Secondly, bigger campsites can make the investment because they just have to raise their prices with a euro or so and they earn it back. We would have to charge much more because the system is expensive and we have so few pitches. As most guests guests have roaming included into their subscription after 1 June 2017 and others buy an Italian sim-card, we think it's only fair if just those people who need it pay for wifi.

Restaurants and pizza

  • Is there a restaurant nearby?
Yes, in the village there is a good place to buy and eat fresh pizzas and there is also one of the best restaurants of the region, Trippini. Grant yourself an extensive Italian high-quality dinner based on the slow food principle (less suitable for children because it will take a few hours). Walking to the village is easy; once you are on the road it is not a steep walk, let’s say ten minutes on foot. In Things to do > restaurants you will find more information.

  • What does the pizza service entail?
We bought a reaaly good pizza oven a few years ago and the dough is made by a pizza baker. Mostly twice a week, dependent on how busy it is and if people start inquiring, we make them in the afternoon with fresh ingredients. We call it a pizza service: there is no restaurant setting on the campsite itself. Inquire when it is available.

Booking

  • Is booking advisable?
For a bungalow or a DeLuxe rent-a-tent: always. For a pitch: if you're planning to be with us in July or August: yes, booking is most advisable. And when you need a lot of space in those months it is even necessary to book well ahead, let's say beginning of May at the very latest. Our policy is to grant everyone enough room to feel comfortable. That means we stop accepting bookings when the pitches are reserved. In that way we keep our guests happy. You can check availability in the pdf's for pitches, DeLuxe rent-a-tents or bungalows.

  • Do I have to make a down-payment (deposit)?
If you have booked or wish to book a pitch: no. What we do ask you to inform us the very moment your plans are changing. If you wish to book a bungalow or a DeLuxe rent-a-tent: yes. The down-payment is 30 per cent of the total amount.

  • Do you rent tents?
Yes. Camping Il Falcone offers two large and well-equipped luxurious Lodgetents. They are popular and always get fully booked quickly. Check the menu.
